Beyond the Resume: How to Assess Soft Skills in Candidates

1 (1)

Resumes highlight experience and qualifications, but they don’t always reveal a candidate’s soft skills—the traits that define how they communicate, collaborate, and solve problems. These skills are often the difference between a good hire and a great one. So, how can employers effectively assess soft skills in the hiring process?

1. Incorporate Behavioral Interview Questions

Ask candidates how they’ve handled real-life work situations. For example:
“Tell me about a time you had to resolve a conflict with a colleague.”
This allows you to gauge their communication, problem-solving, and teamwork abilities.

2. Use Role-Playing or Situational Tests

For roles that require client interaction, leadership, or quick thinking, simulated scenarios help assess skills like adaptability, decision-making, and emotional intelligence in real-time.

3. Observe Communication Style

Pay attention to how candidates express themselves during the interview. Do they listen actively? Can they clearly articulate their thoughts? Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills are key indicators of workplace success.

4. Consider Pre-Hire Assessments

Tools like DiSC profiling, personality tests, and cognitive ability tests can help predict how a candidate might perform in team settings and under pressure.

5. Check References for Insight

Former managers and colleagues can provide valuable insights into a candidate’s work ethic, attitude, and interpersonal skills, giving you a well-rounded perspective beyond their resume.
